Coral Gables Approves $450,000 for Art Cinema Expansion
The Coral Gables Commission allocated $450,000 to expand the Art Cinema at 260 Aragon Avenue, adding a 92-seat theater and lobby. The project aims to strengthen downtown's cultural district alongside Books & Books and the Coral Gables Museum.
The Coral Gables Commission approved $450,000 in funding Tuesday to expand the Coral Gables Art Cinema, marking a significant investment in the city's cultural infrastructure. The allocation includes $100,000 to address a funding shortfall from the cinema's 2019 expansion and $350,000 for new construction.
Mayor Vince Lago championed the initiative, emphasizing the cinema's role as an economic driver for downtown Coral Gables. The facility at 260 Aragon Avenue serves 60,000 visitors annually and features rare 70-millimeter projectors, making it unique among South Florida theaters.
The expansion will convert a storefront retail space at 240 Aragon Avenue into a modern 92-seat theater complete with a large lobby, curated café, and administrative offices. The renovated space will also house a cinema museum featuring artifacts from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, enhancing the area's cultural appeal.
Brenda Moe, the cinema's executive and programming director since 2017, highlighted the facility's specialized capabilities during the commission meeting. The new auditorium will expand programming to include sensory-friendly screenings, expert-led conversations, and educational content for underserved children.
Since receiving initial approval, the cinema has secured over $1 million in private commitments for the project. The primary challenge remaining involves managing increased construction costs, though permanent plans are finalized and donor funding is secured.
The city will serve as construction manager for the project, overseeing procurement and payment schedules according to municipal guidelines. Multiple contractors provided pricing estimates, which city staff reviewed through a comprehensive vetting process.
Mayor Lago noted the investment's dual benefit, as the city owns the building being renovated. The improvements will increase property values while establishing Aragon Avenue as a concentrated cultural center. The cinema anchors this district alongside Books & Books and the Coral Gables Museum.
The expansion reinforces Coral Gables' position as a destination for high-quality cultural experiences. The project combines economic development with cultural enhancement, supporting the city's broader vision for downtown revitalization through arts and entertainment venues.
Construction timelines and opening dates for the expanded facility have not been announced, though city officials expressed confidence in the project's execution given the secured funding and completed planning phases.
